FAQ SKI HELMETS

1. Where can I purchase uvex ski helmets or replacement parts for my uvex products?

You can buy all uvex products and any necessary replacement parts in our shop. If you need a replacement part for your uvex product, we will be happy to order it for you. If available, it will be delivered within two weeks.

2. Do uvex ski helmets come with a guarantee?

All uvex products are manufactured according to the highest quality standards and are subject to strict, in-house inspections which often exceed any legal requirements. Should your product have defects in spite of these precautions, contact us with your warranty claims (legal warranty period as of 2009: 2 years) and repair requests.

Please note that a copy of your sales receipt is required for the verification of your request.

3.  Can I continue using my ski helmet after a fall or collision?

It’s important here to make a distinction between the two following uvex helmet technologies:

Injected shell technology: Unlike the inmould technology, this construction is not directed towards a point deformation, but rather distributes the collision force across the entire helmet, giving it a much longer lifetime. Injection shell constructions are thus almost as light as in-mold products, but have a much more stable outer shell. uvex injection helmets are also more comfortable, because a new, temperature-regulating interior is used alongside perfect, completely draft-free ventilation systems, thus warming when it's cold and cooling during physical exertion and higher temperatures. Furthermore, thermo-formable material is integrated into the top models, adapting to individual head shapes.

Inmould technology: Inmould helmet designs, which are very common in skiing and cycling, guarantee light weight and good safety for the head. Inmould is an inner shell consisting of fused, highly compressed polystyrene pellets which are firmly connected to an impact-resistant outer shell. If the polystyrene suffers a hard blow, it reliably captures the energy, but deforms at the point of impact, similar to the crumple zone in a car.

4. What should I look for when buying a ski helmet?

Please note that the following recommendations are a starting point and do not replace personal advice from a sporting goods store.

Measure your head correctly: The starting point for selecting the right size is measuring the circumference of your head, a finger width above the eyebrows. In many stores, dealers will have head-measuring tapes available. The head size range is given in cm on the sticker on the back of the helmet.

Fitting: Try on several helmets if possible – you will notice a difference in the fit right away! It is important that the helmet noticeably encloses your head. Make sure that the helmet sits comfortably and firmly with its inlaid comfort cushions, but is not too tight.

Correct positioning: Make sure that the helmet is positioned levelly on your head. The helmet should not sit too far back on your head, which leaves the forehead unprotected, nor be pulled too far down over the forehead, where it can affect your vision.

Adjust the size properly: With the adjustable sizing system (IAS system), you can fully customize the size of your helmet. To do so, place the helmet in the proper position and turn the dial at the back of the helmet – clockwise to make the helmet tighter, counterclockwise to make it looser.

The helmet should basically fit. The size adjustment should only be for fine tuning. Athletic and racing helmets are manufactured in individual sizes, because a precise fit is very important for these sports.

Firm fit: You can test if your helmet sits firmly by shaking your head lightly with the chinstrap open. The position of the helmet should not change! An optimum fit is required for the helmet to fulfill its safety function 100%.

Adjusting the strap system:

Remove the comfort cushion on the chinstrap.

Close the ratcheted closure.

Set the length of the chinstrap by pulling on the outer strap!

Reattach the comfort cushion.

5. How do I find the right helmet size for my head?

The starting point for selecting the right size is measuring the circumference of your head, a finger width above the eyebrows. In many stores, dealers will have head-measuring tapes available. The head size range is given in cm on the sticker on the back of the helmet.

6. How often should I replace my ski helmet?

Even though the most state-of-the-art uvex materials ensure long-term safety when treated properly, every ski helmet – regardless of the material – should be replaced after 3 to 5 years of average use.

7. Can I have my ski helmet painted with a custom paint job?

uvex does not offer custom helmet painting. Please note that, when painting, applying stickers, or varnishing, the paints, adhesives, or varnishes may contain components which negatively affect the stability of the helmet and thus its protective effect. If changes like this have been made, we would have to exercise our exemption from liability.

6. Are all uvex ski goggles helmet-compatible?

95 percent of all goggles manufactured by uvex are helmet-compatible. In other words, the goggles are flush with the helmet and thus provide for draft-free skiing pleasure and lots of wearing comfort.

7. How do I clean my ski goggles properly?

Clean the lenses of your ski goggles with a lot of water without additives. Then just shake the lenses off and let them air-dry. If necessary, you can also carefully dab the lenses.

Do not treat the lenses with solvents or household cleaners and use the textile bag included or a lint-free cloth for cleaning.

The inside of the lens has an anti-fogging layer. This highly functional antifogging alloy is scratch-sensitive. You should therefore treat the inside very carefully and in no case wipe it off.

If snow gets into the goggles, then just shake it out.

Always store your ski goggles in a container provided for them (cardboard box, bag) and avoid extreme temperatures over 50° C.

Is my cycling helmet still safe after a fall or collision?

A cycling helmet should always be replaced after a fall or collision! The impact forces on your head during a fall are absorbed by the helmet. In another impact in the same location, the cycling helmet can no longer fulfill its protective function 100%. Please note that – depending on the force and angle of impact – the helmet can even break, and should do so in order to keep the impact forces away from your head.

What should I look for when buying a cycling helmet?

Please note that the following recommendations are a starting point and do not replace personal advice from a sporting goods store.

Fitting: Try on several cycling helmets if possible. It is important that the dimensions of the helmet fit the size of your head and that the helmet noticeably encloses your head. The fine tuning is done with the strap and IAS system.

Correct positioning: Make sure that the cycling helmet is positioned levelly on your head. The helmet should not sit too tightly on the back of your head, which leaves the forehead unprotected, nor be pulled too far down over the forehead, where it can affect your vision.

Firm fit: You can test if your cycling helmet sits firmly by shaking your head lightly with the chinstrap open. The position of the cycling helmet should not change. An optimum fit is required for the helmet to fulfill its safety function 100%.

Adjust the size properly:

a) Position the strap joints (fixed point where the two straps come together) so that the strap does not touch the ears.

b) When adjusting the strap joints, pull the straps on the left and right sides separately to get the correct length. The length of the straps in the closure system must be adjusted so that they both lie tautly under the chin.

c) The length of the straps is set correctly when both straps lie tightly on the head without cutting into it.

d) If the straps are too long, cut off the excess ends (approximately 1.5 inches should stick out). Carefully heat the ends of the strap with a match to prevent fraying. Please note that the ends of the straps may be of different lengths due to the individual adjustment.

How does the uvex IAS system (= individual adapting system) work?

The IAS system is a size adjustment system which can be used to adapt the cycling helmet individually to any head shape. The free-floating design of the ring system provides optimum adjustment, simple use, and maximum ventilation. The setting is made with the wheel located on the back of the cycling helmet – clockwise to make the helmet tighter, counterclockwise to make it looser.

How do I care for my cycling helmet properly?

Please remove the comfort cushions in the IAS system and in the cycling helmet. These can be washed with a mild detergent at 30°C. Dry the comfort cushions at room temperature. The cycling helmet should be cleaned with lukewarm water and a mild soap solution. Do not use solvents (e.g. paint thinner).
